So, I want to talk to men today and the women who love the men in your life. How’s that? I want to talk to the gals who love your husbands, love your dad, your brothers, your sons, and I want to illustrate something that I saw in the story of David and Goliath.
I’ve just asked God to use this message to help the men of our church, and I have found what I’m going to talk about to be a challenge in my own life. So, this is not something where I’m preaching at you. I’m preaching to us together. I’m talking to all of us collectively. And I think that this will resonate with the hearts and the minds of the men that are a part of our congregation.
Whether you are married or not married, whether you’re a father or not a father, whether you’re a young man or older man, I think this will resonate with you today. It might be a surprise to some of the ladies, but possibly more than a surprise, it’ll explain something to you about the men in your life.
Okay? So, everybody, if you would say, “My heart’s open.” My heart’s open. My mind’s ready. My mind’s ready. Make me better, God. By your word. By your word. I receive it. I receive it. I believe it. I believe it. And I won’t be the same again. In Jesus’ name. In Jesus’ name. Shout a great big amen. Amen.
So, what we’re going to talk about today is conquering the confusion in a man’s heart. Conquering the confusion in a man’s heart. Most everybody’s heard about the epic battle between David and Goliath. It started whenever David was bringing food supplies to his brothers who were serving in the military. And David was doing what he was there to do. His father asked him. He was younger. He was a shepherd at that point, tending to things at home. And his father just said, “Hey, can you take some food to your brothers on the battlefield?” And so he did that.
While he was doing it, there was a loud voice that echoed through the valley like a deep thundering sound of a Philistine named Goliath, who was doing what he did every morning for like the last 40 days or so. He would walk to the battle line. He would send out a challenge calling for a man who would fight him in a winner-takes-all battle. A whole lot at stake, a whole lot on the line. And the losing side would become slaves to the winning side.
So David hears this. He’s interrupted by it. He wonders what it is, and he starts to question and ask what’s going on. 1st Samuel 17:10–11 gives the challenge and the response of Saul and his soldiers. It says, “I defy the armies of Israel today. Send me a man who will fight me.” And in verse 11, when Saul, the king, and the Israelites heard this, they were terrified and deeply shaken.
Now, I envision when I read that, I envision men retreating from the battle lines into their tents. And that’s why I have the tent set up here as a visual today. I envision men, and some of the story says they stood at the battle lines, but then as you continue to read through it, you see that they left the battle lines. They fled. They went somewhere. So I’m just thinking, okay, where do you go? You don’t go to your car. You go to tents. And so you’ve got thousands of men going to their tent and getting in their tent, huddled down.
Welcome to a new place, a new relationship, a new space with God.
