Making Room for the Holy Spirit
May 24, 2026
There are miracles in your life and opportunities in your world that will only happen when you make room for the Holy Spirit. In this Pentecost Sunday message from Champion Centre, Pastor Kevin cuts through the confusion and mystery that keeps so many believers at arm's length from the Holy Spirit — and delivers a clear, practical, faith-building case for why making room for God's presence changes everything. Drawing from Acts 1–2, John 14, and the story of the Shunammite woman in 2 Kings, Pastor Kevin unpacks four powerful ways to make room for the Holy Spirit in your everyday life: in your theology, in your expressions of worship, in your need for help, and in your willingness to be led, taught, and reminded. Whether you grew up in church and the Holy Spirit still feels mysterious, or you're brand new to faith and trying to understand who he is — this message will help you see the Holy Spirit not as something strange or uncomfortable, but as your helper, your guide, your teacher, and the invisible presence of God working in your life right now. He's not new to you. You're not new to him. He knows exactly what you need. Make room — and watch what God does. #MakeRoom #HolySpirit #ChampionCentre #PentecostSunday #SpiritLed
Talk-It-Out
Icebreaker
Growing up, how was the Holy Spirit talked about — or not talked about — in your home or church background? Was he mysterious, familiar, uncomfortable, or something else entirely?
Discussion Questions
- The Shunammite woman made room for the prophet without knowing it would position her for a miracle. And in Acts 1, Jesus told the disciples to wait — to make room — before the Holy Spirit could come. What does that pattern tell us about how God tends to move in response to our preparation and availability?
- Pastor Kevin described the Holy Spirit as “the invisible presence of God” — like sound waves or water in the atmosphere: real, active, and life-giving even when you can’t see it. How does that description help or shift the way you think about the Holy Spirit?
- In Acts 19, Paul met disciples who had never even heard of the Holy Spirit — and once they made room in their theology and received prayer, they were filled. What does that story say about the role of teaching and community in opening people up to the Holy Spirit’s work? Is there something in your own theology that might still be limiting what you’re open to?
- Pastor Kevin said the Holy Spirit “is eternal and all-knowing — he knows your family history, your past, and your future. He may be new to you, but you’re not new to him.” How does it feel to sit with that? Does it bring comfort, conviction, or both?
- The message pointed out that the Holy Spirit will often try to steer us away from something we really want — a relationship, a decision, a direction — and that we can either welcome that nudge or push past it in our own will. Can you think of a time you felt that tension? What did you do, and what did you learn from it?
- Pastor Kevin gave four practical ways to make room: in your theology, your expressions of worship, your need for help, and your willingness to be led. Which of those four feels most underdeveloped in your life right now — and what would one small, concrete step toward making more room look like this week?

Man, I’ve been looking forward to today. I was raised Pentecost. I grew up in a Pentecostal church. No apology for that. I’m so thankful. And we are we are theologically champion center. We are theologically aligned with my roots and many of your backgrounds having to do with the reality of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the intentional work of God to actually send the Holy Spirit and give us the opportunity to know God, commune God, commune with God and experience God like we do today.
There’s a story in Second Kings of a a wealthy woman and her husband who built an extra room for the prophet Elisha to stay in anytime he was passing through that area. It’s like a traveling evangelist, you know. And so she went to her husband and said, “You know what? He comes through here often. How about we put a room on the roof and and and build it for him so when he comes through he has a place to come. It wasn’t just a guest house. Like it was the prophet’s room.
And they wanted him to be able to come in at any in the night hours if he was traveling anytime. It was like his space. They wanted him to be at home in their home.
Now, this couple had everything that they needed. They had homes. They had servants. They had livestock except that she was barren and unable to have children.
And after they made a room for the prophet, the prophet prophesied that a year later she would be holding a son.
Now, there’s no way that they would have known that making room for the prophet positioned them for a miracle in their house. There’s no way. They just they just made room. Everybody say, “Made room.”
Everybody say, “Make room.” Made room.
They just made room for the prophet to be there on their property, to be a part of their lives.
And then a baby boy was born to the barren woman.
A lot of believers are familiar with the father. They know who Jesus is, but they’re not as familiar with the Holy Spirit.
So like I’m good. A lot of people would be I’m good with the father. I’m I’m I’m good with the son. I I don’t know about that other part.
Like they they start to back off a bit.
That’s why today I just want to help as many people as I can who who are who are uh I don’t know conflicted maybe in your heart in your mind to really welcome the Holy Spirit and make room for the Holy Spirit in your life because there are miracles in your life and there are opportunities in your world that will only happen when you make room for the Holy Spirit.
Are you hearing me? There are things God has in mind for you that will only happen when you make room for the Holy Spirit.
And so when Jesus mission on earth was finishing up and he had done what he was supposed to do and sent by the father to do, he urged the disciples before he ascended into heaven. He urged the disciples, “Make room for the Holy Spirit in your life.” He taught them about the Holy Spirit. He pointed them towards the Holy Spirit.
They were much like all of us, like attached to Jesus.
I’m attached to Jesus.
If you’re a Christian, I hope you’re attached to his story, his miracles, his provision, and his teachings. Right?
I I’m like I I love Jesus. Anybody love Jesus in the house today? We are Jesus loving people. Right? So you can imagine the position Jesus is in because he knows like this is not the end. This is not the end. Like I’ve come I’ve done my job but there is more. There there is more. It’s like the commercial, you know, the commercial like but there is more. And he his role was to urge them to have faith in the Holy Spirit.
And that when Jesus when when he’s not there anymore, he wanted them to know there was another who was coming.
And and and he was urging them, make room for the Holy Spirit in your life.
The book of Acts, which is where we go a lot to talk about the Holy Spirit because that’s where that’s what was written. But it was written by a who we know as Luke and he took on the name of Theopoulos in his first part of the book of Acts, but I won’t get into all of that. There were customs of that day when they were writing in third person identities and all of that to take attention away from themselves. But but I do want to tell you about Luke because Luke was a Greek. He was a gentile. He was highly educated. So some people who think, you know, if you’re highly educated, then you don’t get into that Holy Spirit thing. Well, the guy who writes the book of Acts was as educated as you could be in his era. He was educated in medicine. He was educated in Greek philosophy. He was educated in art. And he actually thought he was done right. He was a journalist who came to study Jesus to look at Jesus to like make you know write about the works of Jesus and he was he was amazed by it all and caught up in it all and and he thought he was done writing and then it’s like he realized like wait a minute
Jesus did come he resurrected I wrote about all of that but now he’s he’s here like there’s a there’s a window of of several weeks here like where Jesus is walking with his disciples and he’s talking about the Holy Spirit and he’s talking about the kingdom. So basically I’m telling you that because Luke went and got his computer out again and started writing and that’s where the book of Acts came from. Isn’t that interesting? Like that’s where it all started. So Acts chapter 1, I’m going to read a little bit out out of the book of Acts. Acts chapter 1 and verse three it reads like this. And after his suffering meaning Jesus he presented himself to them and he gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion while he was eating with them he gave them this command. Do not leave Jerusalem. wait for the gift of my that my father promised which you have heard me talk about John baptized with water but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit everybody say making room look at your neighbor and say let’s make room
so that’s Jesus talking pointing them toward their future don’t leave Jerusalem wait for the gift my father’s going to send you you’re going to be baptized with the Holy Spirit. So, Pentecost Sunday is the celebration of the day of Pentecost, which marks the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts chapter 2. And I want to read in Acts 2:1, when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together.
Pentecost, by the way, was a a time of feasting. It it was a a feast time named called Pentecost. When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. They were obeying Jesus.
And suddenly, suddenly comes all of a sudden, going to come all of a sudden.
Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting.
And they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire separated came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit, began to speak in other tongues as the spirit enabled them.
This is where it all originates. Just giving you a little background here on how it all got here. The Holy Spirit didn’t just crash in on his own and move Jesus aside.
This was the plan of heaven that Jesus would come physical in physical form. He would establish and set up and begin his kingdom on earth. He would go away and another would come and the other is the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit, don’t get it twisted.
Don’t get it too complicated. The Holy Spirit is the invisible presence of God.
Think about that. You might want to write that down. If the Holy Spirit seems too mysterious to you and you’re like, “Well, I’m good with God and I know that God, you know, is here. He’s here. I don’t see him, but he’s here.” Well, the Holy Spirit is the invisible presence of God.
The spirit of God is invisible like sound waves or radio frequency.
You you get tuned in to the right spot on the radio and boom, the right the the sound comes out, the music comes out like it’s it’s there’s a there’s a wave out. You don’t see it, but when you connect to it, oh, it’s real. It’s up and going. It’s up and running. And in much the same way that you and I have wireless phones and we have internet connections and we have no problem with the fact that that’s all invisible.
There’s radio frequency sound waves. In much the same way, the Holy Spirit, the invisible presence of God is alive and active in the world today. Can you shout amen? Come on. Can we celebrate today?
Another way to think about the Holy Spirit is is that the spirit of God is like water in the atmosphere.
Invisible but very real, very lifegiving. Plants, grass, trees take in and utilize water from the atmosphere.
Water that you and I don’t see, but those plants pull it in and they get life from it. And in the same way, the Holy Spirit is a source of spiritual life, joy, energy, strength. Are you hearing me? Peace.
If you’re getting it, say, “I’m getting it.” Making room.
We’re making room. We get really busy all the time. We get, you know, but we’re making room.
I want to urge you today, make room. Make room.
Make room when you’re doing your housework.
Make room when you’re riding in your car.
Make Make room when you’re alone in your own space in your house. Turn on some worship music.
In fact, get up in the morning with good worship music. Just make room. Holy Spirit, you are welcome here.
Come and fill my day and the atmosphere of my day with your presence.
There’s four ways I want to I want to tell you that to that you can make room for the Holy Spirit in your life. Four ways. Number one, make room in your theology for the Holy Spirit.
Theology is basically the word theology is the study of God. So your theology is your study of God. However deep it might be or however um you know shallow or surface it might be that’s your theology. What what you know about God is your theology. Theology is the study of God. It’s your observation about God, his will, his nature, who he is. And a lot of people have opinions that they just have opinions, but they don’t really know what they’re talking about when it comes to theology. Like they don’t really have theology to back it. That’s a I just want to warn you about all of that. You form opinions about God, about church. I don’t know how why I go to that church. And you know, they they they they raise their hands and they they get loud and they and and I I just don’t think that I just think that’s nonsense. Well, your theology is lacking content.
You know, people don’t know what they don’t know.
And there’s a Bible filled with instruction. Lift your hands. Worship the Lord. Praise him. Give honor to him.
Lift up your head. Lift your voice. Lift like clap your hands. All you people shout unto God with a voice of What are you going to do with all of that?
I recommend that you just open up your theology and make room.
Everybody say make room.
There’s a place in Acts chapter 19 where the Apostle Paul, now remember Acts 19 would have been after Acts 2 after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. And the Apostle Paul met some believers in the city of Ephesus.
And I I I don’t know. I’ll just I’m I don’t mean this mean. I’ll just say they were Catholic or Lutheran or you know a a a church that’s got a lot of ritual and not much space for the talk I’m giving you today. Okay.
The truth is they were disciples of John. So they didn’t like they didn’t go any further. And again they didn’t have they didn’t have what we have media wise. So nobody heard anything. So, Acts chapter 19, the Apostle Paul met some believers in Christ in the city of Ephesus and he asked them if they had received the Holy Spirit.
And they answered, “We we’ve not heard of the Holy Spirit. What What are you talking about?” Like, “We’ve not that that’s odd to us. We know John and we know Jesus and we know Jehovah.
And so Paul taught them about the Holy Spirit and he prayed over them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit.
But the key is that they made room in their theology.
I said they made room in their theology.
Now, I was joking about the when I said, you know, uh, Lutheran or Catholic or whatever, but when I was growing up, my dad was a pastor of a Pentec Pentecost church, and there was a Notre Dame uh, university close by to where we lived.
and and and they were they got into a study about the Holy Spirit and they invited my dad to come over uh to, you know, to teach the Catholics, the nuns, the priests about the Holy Spirit. They didn’t really know what they were getting into. They didn’t know how how good my dad knew his stuff. And the next thing we knew, they were they were gathering in the living room of my home.
And I many nights in in that season, many nights that I would go to bed and I would hear prayer going on in the living room my my of my parents’ house and and the nuns were there and the and the priests were there and what were they doing? They were making room in their theology for the Holy Spirit.
So they were having prayer meetings acknowledging the presence of the Holy Spirit, inviting the Holy Spirit and welcoming the Holy Spirit into their life. And I just want to recommend to anybody, I don’t know your background. I don’t know if you have a church background. I don’t know if you came from a denomination. I want to encourage you today, make room. Everybody say, “Make room.” Make room.
Make room in your theology. Don’t just switch it off as if it doesn’t appear in the Bible. It’s in the Bible over and over and over and over and over again.
So make room in your theology for the Holy Spirit.
Secondly, make room in your expressions for the Holy Spirit in your expressions.
The Holy Spirit never forces himself on anyone.
We like to say the Holy Spirit is a gentleman like he stands at the door and waits until he is invited until he is welcome. If you’re if you’re distant and resistant and all of your body language is, you know, all like right now you’re a little like tight and uncomfortable and don’t worry, he’s not going to he’s not going to mess with you.
He’s he he’s not going to intrude on your will.
He comes where he is welcomed. He comes where he is wanted.
Scripture says God is a spirit. Capital S.
And those who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
welcoming him with open arms.
Like you say, how do I welcome him? Just welcome him with your first of all with just your your heart and then your expressions.
Welcome him when you’re singing. Go ahead and you know, you don’t have to close your eyes. Nobody, the Bible doesn’t instruct us you have to close your eyes.
But we close our eyes because it helps us focus on him.
It helps us unplug from everything around us and the people around us. It it it allows us, you hear what I’m saying? It it just allows when you close your eyes, it it helps you focus on his presence.
And as you sing to him, as you worship him and you lift hands to him and you express your desire for the Holy Spirit to be with you, the Holy Spirit will come to you.
He’ll start hanging out in your car with you on a regular basis. Now, he’s omniresent, so don’t get it mixed up.
God is omniresent. But the actual work of the Holy Spirit is is very intentional in our lives.
It’s a it’s a gift that God has given to the New Testament church.
The Holy Spirit is something that he says, “Hey, I’m I’ve been I’ve been with you, but I’m going to be in you.” That’s what Jesus said. It’s like the same spirit that is in me is is going to be in you. And that’s how he explained like the Holy. So I want to encourage you, make room for the Holy Spirit in your expressions.
If you’re all locked up, chances are you’re not going to ever, you know, like that. But the minute you kneel, you acknowledge. I mean, I don’t know about your relationships. I hope and you understand enough about marriage and family that if you just sit stoic, people are not going to feel comfortable around you.
Grandpas and grandmas who just kind of get older and they just kind of sit there. Kids kids might wander around over and pat them on the but they want to get out of there quick, you know, like I don’t want to bother I don’t want to bother grandpa right now.
But the minute grandpa’s like, “Come here, man. What are you doing, buddy?” It’s like, “Yeah, I am welcome.
I am wanted.” Number three, make room for the Holy Spirit to help you.
Make room for the Holy Spirit to help you. Jesus was with his followers physically, and he knew they would be attached to him, being there with him.
So look how he describes I I mentioned this a bit but I want to go back to it.
Uh look how Jesus describes the Holy Spirit. He says to his disciples he says I will ask the father he’s going to give you another helper to be with you forever. Somebody shout forever. Forever. Say it again. Helper. Helper.
Say helper. Helper.
Forever. Forever. My helper. My helper.
Come on. my helper, my helper forever, forever, even the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. So the world like the the the disciples of of John, they didn’t know that there is a Holy Spirit. So he’s like, “Hey, the world, but you know, I’m letting you know because I want the word to get out that the Holy Spirit is is here on earth when I’m gone.
You know him.” He said, “You know him, for he dwells with you.” Like he’s saying me right now, I’m I’m with you, okay? And will be in you.
Isn’t that cool? The way he He just breaks it down, makes it. Are you understanding? Am I helping somebody today? Like
I like to demystify the Holy Spirit because I think the the the mystery and the mysterious and the, you know, even the word ghost, Holy Ghost, I don’t know about you, I I actually kind of like it because it’s King Jamesy, it’s old style, it’s all that.
But the the truth is is that as time went on what the word the meaning of the word ghost changed in our in you know to today if you look up ghost it’s basically what remains from a dead person and God’s not dead he is alive right so so so we we just talk about the Holy Spirit we just describe it nothing wrong with saying Holy Ghost not not at all but just I I like that he is our helper and remember that the Holy Spirit here’s something that maybe the Holy Spirit is eternal and is all knowing which means hear me out he knows your family history. Okay?
He knows your past and he knows your future.
He may be new to you but you’re not new to him.
He knows what you actually need. Not just what you think you need.
I need a girlfriend. Holy Spirit might say, “No, you don’t.
I got to have a man in my life.” Holy Spirit, not. No, you don’t. You hang on there, girl.
You hang on. I got something I’m working up for you right now.
But you have patience and put your trust in me. Holy Spirit knows what we need.
Are you hearing me? Cuz he knows all about us.
And and he’s here to help us. He knows about God’s plan for your life.
He knows it better than you do. So when you’re going down Elm Street and you’re supposed to be on Main Street, the Holy Spirit is like trying to get you off of Elm and over to Maine. Like you’re supposed to be on Main Street. You’re not supposed to be on Elm Street.
He’s going to bring signals into your life. He’s going to bring signs into your life. I I I love one of the favorite movies I I like of all time.
It’s kind of funny to you probably, but just because there’s things in our is Bruce Almighty years ago because all of those signs that keep popping up, you know, when when he’s like he’s encountering direction from heaven and God like like like he’s just like my goodness like there’s a stop sign. Stop, you know, in front of him.
When you think of the Holy Spirit, maybe that can help you to start looking. Pay attention.
Don’t just say, “Holy Spirit, have your way in my life today.” And then not look for him.
Don’t just say, “Holy Spirit, I need to hear from you.” and then not listen when people walk into your life and and you meet people like like we meet people. This is the way the Holy Spirit works primarily in your life is through people.
Do you see what I’m saying?
So the Holy Spirit is here to help you get beyond what’s possible in your own strength. You might say, “How? Why?”
Well, he he wants to help you do the will of God. He wants to help you be who you’re meant to be. He wants to help you live like you’re meant to live. He wants to help you have faith in God.
And he wants to help you to build your life on God’s word. You have a hard time concentrating and focusing and all of that. Like he wants you to he wants you to learn the word of God. He can help you with that to be strong and to win the battles in your mind. And the Holy Spirit can help you with that. To defeat the enemy whose goal is to destroy you, the Holy Spirit can help. Are you hearing me today? He wants to help you overcome the world.
All of the vices and the troubles and the trials. Okay, I got one more. Make room for the Holy Spirit to lead you, teach you, and remind you.
I I brought three things together there.
Uh, so make room for the spirit to lead you. Be being led by the spirit. This is not goofy, spooky, weird, strange.
And when it is, it’s not the Holy Spirit.
If it’s too like goofy and, you know, is is just somebody, it’s somebody following their own little their own little premonition or thought. You just got to be careful.
He helps us know the will of God. He helps us discern what is right and wrong for us.
He helps us know when a relationship is not right for you.
you might really want that relationship with that person and they’re occupying the space in your world and and the Holy Spirit will will say to you like that’s not good. It’s when you have to decide, am I going to am I going to welcome that?
Because in your knower, you’ll know it’s the truth. Holy Spirit is a spirit of truth. But in your flesh, you might be clinging on to somebody and holding on to something that’s not right for you.
I’m I’m convinced that a lot of marriages that happen happen that that people get married because they wanted it and they’re Christians and so they wanted it and they just made it all feel good and look right. So be careful and make sure you’re consulting the Holy Spirit for wisdom and guidance and direction when you start choosing the person you’re going to spend your life with.
Allow the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit will always be united with the word of God.
The Holy Spirit won’t tell you something that the word of God tells you the opposite.
I have people tell me a lot like, “I just feel like the Lord is leading me to do this.” And I’ll quote him a scripture says the exact opposite. And watch them stubbornly push forward like there, you know, I don’t I know that he’s not saved and he doesn’t really know the Lord yet, but I believe the Lord wants me to date him and like, you know, be a missionary. Well, we don’t do missionary dating.
We don’t do that. Come on all you young people, cheer me on here. We don’t do that. The Bible says, “What fellowship does light have with darkness?” How can two walk together except they agree?
That’s the kind of thing I’m talking about. Like a lot of people will they’ll they’ll push ahead in their own will rather than that voice that’s trying to get in there and go, “No, you know, this isn’t quite right.” Quit trying to convince yourself in your flesh you want something, but it’s not. I’ve been in business situations before where it was time to let go of something that I wanted to hold on to. like we worked hard to get in position to have that house and then I’m hearing something say, “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
That’s not the right one for you.
That tension you’re starting to feel, that’s not me. That’s not That’s not of God. It’s you knowing that maybe you have pushed ahead and I’m not in it.
Yeah. I hope I’m helping you. I know I’m helping you.
So the Holy Spirit teaches things to us that will grow us, will make us better, make us be in the will of God.
And there’s an old saying when it comes to learning. It says when the student is ready, the teacher appears.
And that’s what I’m trying to say to you today. Open your heart to the voice, the instruction, the guidance, the teaching, the nudging of the Holy Spirit. Amen. And he will lead you. He will teach you.
I like to call the Holy Spirit my reminder because many of you will identify with this. Let let me let me tell you what I’m talking about when I say that as a believer, you will hopefully learn a lot more than you can actually retain in your memory. Right? You’ll go to over 50 services a year. You’ll attend church events, conferences. You might listen to some podcasts. The Bible app is on your daily devotional.
You’ll hear other people’s testimonies.
And then you may you may wonder, well, is this extra information actually helpful because I’m not able to retain it all. And the good news is that when you put yourself in a place to keep drinking in the word of God and the knowledge of God, that you will be amazed at how things will pop in your mind.
Courtesy of the Holy Spirit.
Courtesy of the Holy Spirit.
you know, it it something will pop and and you’ll it it’ll be there all of a sudden like you’re trying to figure things out and you’re trying to get things right and then boom, a scripture comes to you and you remember you remember. Yeah.
Or a sermon title.
Like it just could be a title of of of a sermon like like um let me think think of of one u offense.
I’m trying to remember the one that’s kind of catchy that I did years ago.
Holy Spirit, bring that to my mind right now.
Not a good example.
Yeah. Don’t drink the poison.
Did you hear the Holy Spirit? Holy Spirit, talk to me from right over there.
Don’t drink the poison. trying to just illustrate to you.
Does anybody remember what I spoke on last Sunday? Have you forgot?
Would I embarrass you if I pointed to you? And are you saying Nick remembers?
What is it, Nick? Go get it back. What is it? Go get it. Go get it back.
Go get it back. I’m not saying that was the Holy Spirit. That was his memory probably. I’m just saying six months from now, go get it back. Boom. Could pop in your head whenever you’re wondering like the enemy just came in and he’s stealing that out of my life.
And then all of a sudden, go get it back. Pastor Kevin spoke on it. Go get it back. I’m going to go get it back.
That’s how the Holy Spirit, he’s a reminder in our lives. Come on, let’s clap our hands and thank God for the Holy Spirit.
Amen. Amen.
I’m going to ask everybody every location just stand with me if you would. Oh, I worship you.
Don’t anybody leave. Just stay here with us.
You are here. You are here working in this place. I worship you.
Would you just close your eyes? And I worship you. Amen. You are here.
Thank you.
Moving in our midst. Thank you that you’re here. I worship you. You’re here. We know you.
I worship you. We know you’re present.
You are here working in this place.
I worship you. Oh, I worship you.
You are way maker, miracle worker, promise keep, light in the darkness.
My God, that is who you are.
You are a way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, light in the darkness. My God, that is who you are. You are
You are way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, light in the darkness.
My God, that is who you are. Yeah.
Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, light in the darkness. My God, that is who you are.
That is who you are. That is who you are.
