parent night coming up tomorrow night. I want to encourage all you parents, come be a part of that night. Come with other
parents that will be in the building at all locations. Join our team and and uh just remember we are we are building the church. We are fighting for our family.
So, we’re going to have a great time on parent night tomorrow night. So good to see all of you today in the house of
God. We welcome you to all of our locations. Welcome in Deont. Welcome in Yakama. Welcome in Belleview. Welcome online. And welcome right here in
Tacoma. So glad that you are here today in the house. Why don’t you uh turn around and just tell somebody right now?
Look them in the eye. Tell them, “I’m glad you’re here today. I’m glad you’re here.” And then turn the other direction. Just tell somebody. That’s
your second choice. I’m glad you’re here. And then I’m gonna ask you to remain standing if you would for just a
moment. And uh we’re in a series right now on the presence and the purpose and the power of the Holy Spirit. So say
with me, my heart’s open and my mind’s ready.
Make me better, God, by your word.
I receive it and I believe it and I won’t be the same again in Jesus name.
Okay, you may be seated.
In the 40 days after the resurrection, Jesus talked about he talked about two things. He talked about the coming of
his kingdom and the coming of the Holy Spirit. So, we just had Easter. We celebrated the
resurrection and I’m wanting to give you some context in this teaching to understand that Jesus really he had
talked about the Holy Spirit and the kingdom before this but he narrowed down everything uh in the 40 days where he
was with his disciples and entering in and out of conversations with them in and out of settings and rooms and those
were the two things that he was focused on and he told his disciples he said it’s good that I’m going away because
when I go the comforter or some versions say the advocate or the counselor
is going to come and he’s talking about in those settings he’s saying it’s good
I go away because the Holy Spirit is going to come when I go he comes
and and he said things like I have been with you he’s bringing assurance to the disciples he They’re hearing him talk.
They don’t really understand everything’s going on, but he’s saying, “I’ve been with you, but he will be in
you.” And and that was that was the kind of conversation that was consistent. But I want to really point out Acts chapter
1 verse 8. And here’s what Jesus says to them. He says, “But you will receive
power when the Holy Spirit comes on you
and you will be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the
earth. You will receive power.” Now Jesus is telling his disciples right here that they were going to be
empowered by the Holy Spirit to fulfill God’s plan and purpose in their life.
Like they they were going to have power to witness. And this is both the evangelistic sense as well as it is the legal sense of a witness. He’s just
letting them know, hey, you’re going to have power like you’re going to have something happening in your life as I
leave you physically. You’re going to be you’re going to have a power. you’re going to be empowered. Now, the Greek
word in the text for power here when he says you’ll receive power, the Greek word is the the the word dunamis,
that’s the Greek word for power. And in English, it’s translated literally dynamite.
D. Everybody say dynamite. Such a powerful sounding word, isn’t it? And it
refers literally if you look it up in in in scripture uh and the the the uh definition of it,
it literally is the strength and the power or ability. The strength to have strength to have power to have ability.
So Jesus is saying, “Hey, you’re going to have strength and you’re going to have power and you’re going to have
ability to witness and to represent me after I’m gone.” So here we are. Think
about this. Here we are 2,000 years later, 2.6 billion Christians around the world.
We are his witnesses.
We are 2.6 6 billion on the planet right now. Now, don’t get it twisted because I know some of you right now, you’re like,
“Well, America is not Well, I understand. I understand. Don’t get it twisted. Although America
and for that matter many western countries right now there’s a decline in Christianity,
there is a fullon revival going on around the world
and based on recent studies including a comeback in America, it’s
estimated that in the next 20 years the numbers will increase by another 8 to 10 billion 8 to 10 billion believers that
will be alive at the same time on the planet. Think about what I’m saying to you. And the main growth
is not in traditional churches or churches that have, you know, God in a box. And I’m not trying to I’m not
trying to shame anyone, but the the main growth is in spiritfilled churches where
people are receiving the power of the Holy Spirit.
So in the same way that the Holy Spirit came to empower believers in the book of Acts to start
this movement that we are still a part of today and is still growing and the witnessing is still happening and we are
his witnesses right now on earth in Tacoma in Belleview in Dupont. We are witnesses. Other believers are in
different churches. We are witnesses and we’re continuing on with with what God has given us and walking in the power of
the Holy Spirit. He has also come and I want to take a minute and talk about this. He has also come to empower you individually.
Now you might think well well empower me like how how does he empower me? How how
and why? Well, here’s how he empowers you to do the will of God.
Next time you think, “I just can’t do it.” If it’s the will of God, you remind yourself that the Holy Spirit is going
to help me, and I’m going to be empowered to do God’s plan for my life.
He empowers you to be who you’re meant to be, to live like you’re meant to live. Scripture says, “For it is God who
works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Like he is empowering you to have faith. He’s
empowering you to build your life on God’s word. He’s empowering you to be strong mentally and strong emotionally.
He’s empowering you to win the battles in your mind. Can somebody say, “Thank God. Thank God for that.” He empowers us
to win the battles that are happening in our mind. The Holy Spirit empowers us to
defeat the enemy whose goal is to destroy you. Jesus said that that Satan comes, the enemy comes to steal, kill,
and destroy. I came that you might have a life, have it more abundantly. The spirit and the holy spirit and the power of the spirit, the dunamis power of the
spirit is on our side to help us to defeat the enemy whose goal is to
destroy us and destroy our marriage and destroy our family and destroy our lives. The Holy Spirit is here to help
us overcome the world with all of its vices and all of its troubles and all of
its trials. I mean, we know that that the world is a place where it’s not easy. Jesus even said, “In the world,
you’re going to have you’re going to have trouble, but be of good cheer.” Why? Because I’ve overcome the world.
The Holy Spirit’s going to be with you to help you overcome the world. We’re talking about power. Somebody shout power.
Come on, somebody shout dunamis.
Dunamis power coming to us, surrounding us and in us by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Another thing about the Holy Spirit is that the Holy Spirit has come to be with us and in us. So I just gave you a
couple of quick illustrations about that. That is he who works in you. I quoted that verse and but here’s one.
John chapter 14, it says that the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive
because it neither sees him or knows him. But you know him. And here’s the key line. for he dwells with you and
will be in you. Jesus is talking to his followers and this is what he says to
them in and is quoted saying this to them in scripture and and he’s letting
them know, hey, with you now, in you later. With you now, in you later. With
you now, in you later. So the Holy Spirit is both with us. Everybody say with me. Say it again with me. And now
say in me. Holy Spirit is not just with us but he is here to be in us.
Scripture says that the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. One who’s in you. And another
scripture says for it is he who works in you to will and to act. I like this scripture a lot. Philippians 2, he says,
“It is he who works in you to will and to act in order to f fulfill his purpose,
his good purpose.” How many of you know God has a purpose for your life? Come on. How many of you know he has a purpose? You’re not here by accident.
You’re not here by coincidence. He has a purpose. And the Holy Spirit knows that about you. And the Holy Spirit is with
you in you to help you to help me to fulfill God’s purpose in our life.
Can you shout amen? Come on. Can you say God is good?
Are you thankful today for the Holy Spirit? For his presence, for his life, for his strength. Come on, let’s just
take a minute and celebrate the Holy Spirit in our lives today, leading, guiding, directing, teaching, counseling
us. Amen. We’re thankful for the Holy Spirit. The New Testament church was a spiritfilled church.
The the scripture describes that and refers to believers in various way. It describes believers as being led by the
spirit, walking in the spirit, living in the spirit, being filled with
the spirit, being baptized in the spirit,
singing in the spirit, the fruit of the spirit.
The New Testament church was a spiritfilled church.
The Holy Spirit is for everyone.
A spiritfilled life is not for a few people.
But a spiritfilled life is for every everyone. Every believer. Like walking in the spirit is for everybody. Living
in the spirit is for everybody. being filled with the spirit, praying in the spirit. It’s not it’s not just one,
you know, given to one denomination, but is given to all who receive.
The Holy Spirit is given to all who receive. And is that special
presence of God, that presence of God that we’ve been talking about in this series that is
invisible and tangible like invisible in the atmosphere like
water is invisible in the atmosphere. We all know that H2O is around us and that’s how we that’s how we live. Like
we live by the the atmosphere that has water in it. That’s that’s just a great
thing to keep remembering. If you’re wondering, well, I don’t see the Holy Spirit. Where is he? I wish I could shake his hand. I wish I could I could
meet him. Just remember Jesus talked about God. He said, God is a spirit. God is a spirit. And the Holy Spirit is the
invisible but tangible presence of God that not only is with us
but is in us and will be with us in our car, will be with us in our home, will be with us at work, will be with us when we’re out having fun with our family.
like he doesn’t he doesn’t check out of your life because you’re having fun and it’s not real spiritual. No, he handles
all that just great. Like he he’s there to bring joy. The fruit of the spirit in fact is is is a lot of what those things
are. Love and joy and peace and longsuffering and gentleness and those that’s the fruit of the spirit. So if there’s joy going on, he’s comfortable
right there. if if there’s unity going on and families having fun and dads are loving kids and kids are enjoying life
and that he’s right there. He doesn’t just wait for you at church. He doesn’t just wait for you at a certain moment in
your life. He is with us. Just like again like the atmosphere is filled with water. the atmosphere around our lives
where we welcome the Holy Spirit to be is filled with the Holy Spirit.
Acts chapter 2, I want to I want to talk about this uh chapter today. First verse says that when the day of Pentecost was
fully come, now the day of Pentecost, I know right now you hear the word Pentecost, you might think of a certain denomination, Pentecostal
people versus Baptist people versus, you know, whatever, Methodist people. Uh Pentecost was in the context or in the
text of Acts chapter 2, uh Pentecost was actually a holiday. It was a feast day.
And so the reference in Acts 2 verse one, you can open your Bible, you can look at it if you want to kind of follow. I’m just going to go over the top of it here
and and describe it to you. But it was it was a feast day and it says when the day of Pentecost was fully come.
So So 50 days after resurrection was the marked holiday. It was the marked times.
50 days and then there’s Pentecost.
Okay, Pentecost Sunday, by the way, this year is May 28th. If this is really odd or unusual for you, you you can go
research it, look it up, and and this is a recorded space for Christians of all ages. There’s a Pentecost Sunday, and
it’s coming up May 28th this year. So, it says that on the day of Pentecost, it was fully come. They were all together
and meaning that there were 120 believers who were gathered together and they were in what was called an upper room of a house. The way houses were
built they’re they’re in the upper room, right? And they’re praying, they’re singing. There’s there’s not a lot of
description about, but I’m I’m pretty confident that they may have been sitting. Some may have been standing.
They may have been just walking around the room and doing what the believers of that day did when they gathered to honor
the Lord and to worship him. And they’re just praying and singing. And and the Bible says that there was a
hurricane-like wind, a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the house.
I’ve wondered so much about that. Like, was it just in the house? Was it just in the space they were in? Like, I I don’t
really know. Did it hit the town? Like, I don’t really know. I think it was pretty much right there where they were.
And there’s this wind like rushing mighty wind. And the
outcome was that they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and praying in
tongues, which is also known as praying in the spirit.
And this had never happened before. So here they are praising,
praying, worshiping. And then things start to come out of them that are not
familiar to them. And praying in the spirit, let me explain a little bit about that. Is it’s prayer and praise that bypasses the intellect.
And that’s really not easy for a lot of people. That’s why when I started the
series, I I noted for you that the guy who wrote the book of Acts was a really intelligent guy named Luke who was not
one of the 12 disciples, but he was a physician and he was really like cerebral and smart because I wanted you
to know if you are that if if you hear something like this and it scares you or it frightens you, I want you to know that the guy who wrote about this, he
was on that reserve side of the spectrum where his intellect and his mind and his thoughts were not just loose or they
they they they he had to connect the dots. Like he’s the guy who had to like connect the dots, but was open enough
that he was receptive to what was happening in the early church and he was
recording it. He was remembering, oh wow, wow, wow, wow. Jesus talked about this coming the coming of the Holy
Spirit and and he started like and he’s the one that wrote when the day of Pentecost was fully come they’re all together in one place suddenly there came a sound from heaven rushing men
went filled the house they’re sitting and and they all began to speak with other tongue like he wrote about it and then he goes on and explains that that
it was like a these are my words by the way but it’s like a river of living
water like it was like a it was a baptism experience. In other words, that
was filling them and filling and still does fill the inner person. And it
envelops the soul. It envelops the mind, the will, the emotions. Remember the
soul like the net around the mind, the will, the just envelops all of that.
fills our spirit, envelops our mind, our will, our emotions.
I don’t know exactly what they all acted like in Acts two,
but after a while, the singing and the worship
spilled into the streets as people gathered around in the streets
and the people started hearing them. Remember it was a feast, a holiday season. They were there
from all different all different places speak who spoke different languages and they start hearing their own language
spoke by people that they knew were not of their tribe or their nationality or didn’t speak their languages. So there’s
these there’s the signs of of the presence of the Holy Spirit in a way that people were like they’re confused
by it. They don’t understand it. Like what is going on? This is crazy. But they were intrigued by it. And and as
they were out in the street, some were saying, “They’re drunk. They’re drinking. They’re drinking too much.
They’re act.” Which kind of gives us a little bit of insight into the fact that they were pretty loose. Like they were pretty free.
They were people who were being accused of of having been intoxicated by those that are
around because they couldn’t find another explanation. Let me just say this to anyone today uh because you know
it’s been my intent from when we started this and it always is in the life of our church to say that that everybody who
experiences the Holy Spirit doesn’t act the same way and is not supposed to.
Everybody who receives the Holy Spirit or welcomes the Holy Spirit, engages the Holy
Spirit, filled with the Holy Spirit, doesn’t act the same way and doesn’t have to and not supposed to.
I I went I remember I went a few years ago to visit the New York Stock Exchange and let’s just say that there was a lot
of energy in that place. Some of you have been, you know what I’m talking about. But there I was and and and I’m
with a little group of people that came to see it and observe it. And I’m watching the people who did that every day. Like they they do that every day.
And and they were so familiar with what’s going on that it was like they were kids playing in their backyard.
They’re running around, they’re yelling, they’re rushing here, they’re rushing there. They’re like they’re taking stuff in writing and but they’re just all like
in their little playground. New York Stock Exchange, sophisticated people, smart people, um ties, suits, many of
them like just and and New Yorkers as well as other people and and they are they are just like little kids running
around in the backyard and they’re they’re they’re yelling and they’re doing their deal. But for the others,
people like me who had never been in that room before, it was uncomfortable, but it was fascinating.
And it gave me a whole new perspective on the stock market. The way they were behaving wasn’t symbolic of just a
playground. It just felt like that the the that was very serious stuff that was going on. the New York Stock Exchange like it’s really that that’s big stuff.
Lot lots of money, millions and millions of dollars like being traded and moved and shuffled and and and lots of thinking going on and on their on their
phones and they’re taking directions from somebody else like that that stuff mattered big time. You understand what I’m saying? It wasn’t just a little
playground where nothing mattered. And and that’s one way I I I can explain to
you a lot of times what happens in atmospheres where the Holy Spirit is is that people respond in different ways
and we should not be alarmed. We should not be, you know, I come from old school
Holy Spirit settings. I’ve seen people uh I’ve I’ve seen people like just shake
and and just like speaking in tongues and you could tell their body and their life just physically engaged in ways and
these people like I’m watching some some of it as a boy and as a child and and I know that’s not your experience. Many of
you have not seen that and it’s like it could be frightening. It could make you nervous. I get it. I get it. I’m not
asking anybody to do any of that. I want you to relax. Okay? I just want you to to be be at ease. All right? Ju just
just I’m pointing out to you what is clearly in the Bible as the intention of
God. But it doesn’t mean everybody responds the same way. It’s like, you know, people respond in different ways when they’re cold.
My wife, like when she gets cold, she’s shaking. She’s running for a blanket and she’s like, “It’s so cold in this house.
Like, it’s so cold in here.” And and you know, when I’m cold, I’m like, “Walk to the thermostat. Check it out.” It’s like people just respond differently, right?
When different things are happening to them, different, you know, people respond differently when they’re scared.
Like some people when they’re scared, they are they are in total alarm and they they run. They they go they and and
other people are calm, focused, collected. People respond in different ways when they’re surprised
like like different ways. My my grandson, they they love to be hiding somewhere and to catch you coming around
the corner and and I again I respond like I I jump. I’m like, “Oh my god.”
like but some people like go in my house I won’t name anybody but they go through the ceiling in a moment like that they
lose it like completely so we all respond in different ways do you understand what I’m saying different
ways at the ball game when you’re supporting the team that you love everybody doesn’t some people paint
themselves up they’re there like you think those people are crazy but they’re actually engaged in the same thing that
the person next to them is engaged in who’s not doesn’t have paint on. They’re just there. They’re a fan. They’re happy. They might have the cap on.
They’ll clap every once in a while, but they they want their team to to win.
They want their team that day to be a great day. Some people are jumping up and down and, you know, blowing horns.
All I’m trying to say to you is that the Holy Spirit doesn’t make anyone do anything.
And if you’ve felt that way or been told that, like I want to I want you to
understand that this the Holy Spirit is subject to us.
The Holy Spirit re is not like taking people over and causing you to do things
that you don’t want to do. In fact, the New Testament teaches us leaders in the church to to maintain order while the Holy Spirit is at work in our services.
I I’ve seen people get out of order and then I’ve I’ve heard them say things like, “Well, I just can’t help it.” No, you can help it. Look at me. You can’t
help it if you came from a way where you think I’m just going to climb the wall, bite the ceiling, like just understand
that I expect in our church for our church to to to realize that the Holy
Spirit comes to engage us. We’re here to worship. An expressionfilled atmosphere is is welcomed. It’s awesome.
But when somebody starts like getting out of order and taking things over and behaving in a way that distracts
everybody else because they’re screaming crazy levels of, you know, decibb and stuff like that. I I just want you to know I we don’t do that around here.
And and when people say the Holy Spirit came on me and I can’t help it, that’s just not true. So don’t be doing that.
You understand what I’m saying? Don’t be doing that. and they’ll be saying, “You can’t help it how you respond to God’s presence when we’re gathering for a
church service.” Now, if you’re alone and you’re in your home and you’re in your car, you can have yourself a part.
Like, you do what you want. Turn up as loud, shake, and jive and it’s just you.
But when we’re gathered singing or praying and we’re leaning into worship and I I I want to ask you I want to encourage our whole church that when the
spirit of God is in our midst, let’s let’s sing together.
Let’s praise together. Like let’s worship together. Let’s not try to be
make a scene or you know distract other people. Let’s raise our hands together.
Let’s rejoice together. When we’re when we’re lingering, wait with us. Just wait with us in the
presence of God. Linger with us. There’s order to the work of the Holy Spirit.
And just know that when we’re waiting on the Lord, God’s working that he’s working. Like, there’ll be times when we
pray over people. Pray with us. Stretch your hands out. Pray. come alongside somebody in the front of the services when we do that and and pray with them.
Like those are the appropriate times. If you haven’t been to rally night, come on out to rally night. Rally night, we have
an extended time of worship and prayer and praise and people being baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit. So, we are
so open and always open. And I want you to be open and welcoming of the Holy Spirit in your life. You don’t need to
be afraid. You don’t need to shrink back. You don’t need to compare yourself with other people. You don’t need to
feel the weight of expectations coming from someone else. No, no, no, no. On the day of Pentecost, after a crowd had
gathered, Peter got up and he explained what was happening. And he said, “This is that that was prophesied by the prophet Joel.” And he went back to the
Old Testament. He went back to the Old Testament and he quoted the Old Testament prophet named Joel who said
this. He said, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my spirit on all
people.” And Peter gets up. He had to calm everybody. He had to bring order in some way, shape, or form. They didn’t
have microphones. They didn’t have. But he gets up in the middle of that scene I just described for you today and he says, “Hey,
all of you, those of you from other places and other countries and other tribes and other today, let me just tell
you that what we’re witnessing today is what the prophet Joel in the Old
Testament that we know and we’ve read, what he said was going to Come. He said, “In the last days, says God, I will pour
out my spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters prophesy. Old men are
going to see visions. Young men are going to dream dreams.” And like he just like laying it all out there. And and
then he said this, and and this is where I want you to just receive this today.
Peter said to everybody, he he said,”Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus for the forgiveness of your sins.” In other
words, come to him and receive his forgiveness and his grace in your life.
And then he said, “And you’ll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” The promise is for you and it’s for your children and it’s for all of those who
are far off way out in time and way out in the future like all of the including us today. like it’s for you, your
children, and all who are far. As many as the Lord our God will call, he will also baptize with the Holy Spirit.
Ain’t that good? So, the promise of the Holy Spirit is for you and your family, whoever will, as many as the Lord our
God shall call. Amen. Amen.
All right. I I want you just to stay where you are right now and we’re going to we’re going to spend a few minutes in
an atmosphere of worship. And I’m just believing today that God has a plan and a purpose and he’s at work in our lives.
And at every location, I invite you right now just to stand to your feet. Don’t look around. Nobody rushing out.
Let’s take some time. We have some time today and I’d like us to take a few minutes in the presence of God to
acknowledge the Holy Spirit to embrace him to be with us and to rest on us.
I worship you. I worship you.

You are here. Let’s acknowledge the Holy Spirit. We acknowledge him today.
Honor him today.
I worship you. Just feel free to lift your head up back and
I worship you. I worship you.
How many of you know that we need God’s presence today? How many of you know that? Like how many of you know we need heaven on earth?
We need heaven in our homes.
We need the Holy Spirit guiding us, teaching us as parents. We need we need the Holy
Spirit to help us with our our children, guiding our children. We need the Holy Spirit to empower us.
We’re facing things today that are different and unusual.
Many people, many of God’s people are perplexed and just and that’s where the Holy Spirit factors into our lives. We
need him today strengthening us, protecting our families, protecting our
homes, counseling us. You are here working in this.
We worship you. Go ahead. I worship you. Come on. Come on. Come on.
You are here. You are here. Oh, how he wants to be in our lives.
I worship you. I worship you.
You are here touching every touching every heart.
I worship you. I worship you.
Thank you, God, for your presence. Thank you for your presence.
Thank you for your power, healing every Thank you for your promises. I worship you.
Thank you for your blessing and your favor. I worship you.
Thank you for your wisdom in our lives today.
maker, way maker, miracle worker, miracle worker.
My God, that is who you are. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus.
Thank you, God. is my God. That is who you are.
I’m going to ask everyone who would to just in the in the next few moments stay in this spirit of atmosphere of prayer.
And I’m going to invite people who would say today, “Pastor Kevin, I actually need that first line from the uh Apostle
Peter’s message where he said,”Repent and be baptized. like that first line of coming to God and letting him know I want to be in right standing with you. I
acknowledge you. Your will is working in my life. I need salvation today. And if that’s you, I’m going to invite you, whoever you are right now, to join us.
Let’s pray this prayer. Let’s pray it out loud. Sir, God’s calling you. Ma’am, God’s calling you. God’s brought you to this place for a new beginning in your life and in your relationship with God.
And I’m going to invite you right now, if that’s you and you feel God drawing you by the power of the Holy Spirit, I’m going to invite you right now to just pray with me and and and say it out
loud. Say, “Lord Jesus, come into my heart.
Come into my life. Forgive me of all my sin. Make me a new person.
I receive you now. You are my leader. You are my Lord.
And I declare today I won’t be the same again. In Jesus name.
In Jesus name.
