Helping Our Kids Win the Battle in Their Minds

Our kids are growing up in a world filled with voices, messages, expectations, and ideas competing for their attention. Learning how to navigate those voices is part of growing up, but they don’t have to figure it out alone.

One of the greatest things we can teach our kids is this:

Not every thought that enters your mind deserves a place in your heart.

The Bible gives us a powerful picture of what it means to take responsibility for our thoughts:

“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

2 Corinthians 10:5

Taking a thought captive means we don’t simply accept every thought as truth. We can stop, recognize what we’re thinking, compare it with God’s truth, and choose what we will believe.

At Champions Centre Kids, we want to help our kids begin learning this at an early age. We want them to know God’s truth, believe what He says about them, and have practical tools they can use when negative thoughts show up.

That’s why we’re excited to begin Mind Monsters for Kids.

A Resource Created for the Next Generation

The FAITH acronym and the 4 R’s our kids will be learning come from the teaching in Pastor Kevin’s book, Mind Monsters , and have been adapted for kids through Mind Monsters for Kids by Pastor Jodi Cameron.

It’s a powerful way to take biblical truth and give our kids language they can remember and practical tools they can use in everyday life.

We’re Teaching Our Kids FAITH

One of the foundations we’ll be learning together is a simple FAITH acronym that our kids can remember and carry with them:

F — Focus on the Positive
A — Affirm Yourself
I — Imagine God Doing Something Great
T — Trust God in Everything
H — Hope for the Best

FAITH gives our kids a simple way to intentionally direct their thoughts toward what is true, positive, and full of hope.

It’s not about pretending that hard things aren’t real. It’s about teaching our kids that what they focus on matters, what they say to themselves matters, and that they can choose to trust God even when they don’t know what comes next.

When Mind Monsters Invade, Remember the 4 R’s

Even with strong faith, negative thoughts will come. So what do we do when a Mind Monster shows up?

Recognize.
Notice the thought. Identify what is happening instead of simply accepting it as truth.

Reject.
You don’t have to agree with every thought that comes into your mind. Reject the thoughts that are not true or that don’t line up with God’s Word.

Replace.
Replace the negative thought with what is true. God’s Word gives us something better to believe.

Retrain.
The more we practice this, the more we learn to think differently. We can train our minds to recognize truth and respond with faith.

These are lessons our kids can carry far beyond a classroom.

Because learning to manage our thoughts isn’t just something we need as children. It is a skill we continue to practice throughout our lives.

Building a Foundation for Life

Every October, we take time to focus intentionally on our kids’ thought lives through Mind Monsters for Kids, giving them language and tools to recognize, reject, replace, and retrain the thoughts that come their way.

And we make it fun!

We’ll wrap up the month with our Mind Monsters Bash on October 25, celebrating everything our kids have learned and reminding them that they don’t have to let their thoughts control them.

As parents, we can reinforce these same truths at home.

Ask your kids:

What Mind Monster have you been dealing with lately?

What is the thought telling you?

Is it true?

What does God say instead?

Then help them practice the 4 R’s:

Recognize. Reject. Replace. Retrain.

Our kids may not be able to control every thought that comes into their minds, but they can learn what to do when those thoughts come.

We can teach our kids to take their thoughts captive, make them obedient to Christ, and build their lives on the truth of God’s Word.
