True North for Kids: Helping Our Kids Know the Truth
True North for Kids: Helping Our Kids Know the Truth
The world is full of voices. Our kids need to know which one to follow.
As parents, one of the greatest things we can give our kids is a foundation they can stand on when everything around them feels uncertain.
That’s why we love True North for Kids.
Throughout this series, we’re helping our kids discover that the Bible is their True North. It shows them the right way to go, points them toward God, and gives them a foundation of truth that never changes.
Because just like North is always North…truth is always truth.
What Is Truth?
Truth is what’s real and always right.
Jesus stood for truth, even when it wasn’t easy. In John 18:37, Jesus said, “Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”
Our kids are growing up in a world where they will hear countless opinions about who they are, what matters, what is right and wrong, and how they should live.
We want them to know that truth isn’t something they have to figure out on their own.
God’s Word is our compass.
When we don’t know which way to go, we can look to God’s Word. When the world gets loud, we can come back to what God says.
Learning to Recognize a Lie
Jesus tells us in John 8:44, that the devil is the father of lies. Lies can sneak in quietly through our thoughts, our circumstances, and even the messages we hear from the world around us.
Sometimes a lie sounds like:
“I’m not good enough.”
“I have to be like everyone else.”
“Nobody understands me.”
“This is just who I am.”
Our kids need to learn that a hard truth is always better than an easy lie.
And how do we recognize a lie?
We know the truth.
The more we get God’s Word into our hearts and minds, the more familiar we become with what is true. When we know what God says, we can recognize when a thought, message, or belief doesn’t line up with His Word.
That’s where parents play such an important role. We can help our kids identify the lies they encounter, but we also need to help them build God’s Word into their hearts and minds so they can recognize truth for themselves.
The Truth About YOU
One of the most important truths our kids can know is the truth about who God says they are.
God made you on purpose.
God loves you.
You are chosen.
You are loved.
You are His.
Ephesians 4:22–24 reminds us that we can take off the old self and put on the new self. Our identity doesn’t have to be determined by what we think about ourselves, what someone else says about us, or what the culture tells us we should become.
We can learn to see ourselves through the truth of God’s Word.
Parents, You Are Part of the Foundation
The goal of True North for Kids isn’t simply for our kids to memorize a few truths at church. We want these truths to become part of the way they think, talk, make decisions, and navigate life.
And parents, you have an incredible opportunity to help make that happen.
Talk about truth at home. Ask your kids what they learned. When they hear something that doesn’t line up with God’s Word, help them talk it through. When they believe a lie about themselves, remind them what God says is true.
You don’t have to have every answer.
You simply get to keep pointing them back to their True North.
And most importantly, help them get God’s Word into their hearts and minds.
That might look like reading a daily devotional together, memorizing a verse as a family, talking about a Bible story at the dinner table, or simply taking a few minutes to ask, “What does God’s Word say about that?”
Keep Growing as a Parent
As parents, we don’t have to have every answer, but we do want to keep growing in our ability to lead our kids toward truth.
One of the ways we can equip ourselves is by taking advantage of Parent Nights when we host them. These gatherings are designed to help you navigate the conversations, challenges, and questions that come with raising kids in today’s world.
You can also visit our Parent Resources page for tools and resources designed to help you build faith into everyday family life.
And last, but certainly not least…read your Bible! 😉
The best way for us to recognize truth and help our kids recognize truth is to know God’s Word for ourselves. As we get His Word into our own hearts and minds, we become better equipped to point our kids back to their True North.
Read it together. Talk about it. Memorize it. Ask questions. Keep coming back to what God says.
Because we don’t have to know everything.
We just need to keep pointing our kids to the One who does.
The world will keep changing.
God’s Word never will.
Let’s help our kids know their True North.
